Ghee in Panchakarma: The Ultimate Detox
Panchakarma—Ayurveda's profound detoxification system—relies heavily on ghee. Here's why.
Understanding Snehapanam
Snehapanam means "therapeutic ghee drinking." For 3-7 days, increasing amounts of medicated ghee are consumed on empty stomach.
How It Works
Ghee is lipophilic—it binds to and carries fat-soluble toxins. The ghee:
- Penetrates deep into tissues
- Binds to accumulated toxins (Ama)
- Loosens them from tissue sites
- Carries them to the GI tract for elimination
The Panchakarma Sequence
- Purvakarma (Preparation): Snehapanam with ghee
- Swedana (Sweating): Opens channels
- Pradhanakarma (Main treatment): Vamana/Virechana
- Paschatkarma (Post-treatment): Rebuilding with ghee again
Why Only Ghee?
- Most easily digested fat
- Enhances Agni (digestive fire)
- Doesn't aggravate any dosha
- Ancient texts specifically prescribe cow ghee
Caution
Panchakarma should only be done under qualified supervision. Home detoxes cannot replicate the full benefits.
The ancient science of purification. Pure ghee matters. Gowraj.
